Mr Leroy Ma
Piano Teacher
Leroy Ma is a pianist of exceptional musical sensitivity whose talent was recognised from an early stage of his musical development. He began playing the piano by ear in early childhood, demonstrating a natural musical instinct that later evolved into disciplined professional training.
Leroy commenced formal studies with Dr Paul Rickard-Ford and was awarded a scholarship to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Open Academy Rising Stars Program, where he undertook advanced musical training. He achieved his Associate in Music Australia (AMusA) with Pass with Distinction, and has since built an extensive record of competition success and performance experience both in Australia and internationally.
He has received numerous awards at the Sydney Eisteddfod, and in 2015 was awarded 4th Prize at the Pearl River International Piano Competition in China. He was subsequently selected to perform in the Australian Showcase for the Sydney International Piano Competition, where he received strong praise from the international jury.
In 2017, Leroy won 3rd Prize at the International Piano Competition “A Step Towards Mastery” in St. Petersburg, Russia, performing with the St. Petersburg State Capella Orchestra. He has since appeared in recital in Australia and New Zealand, including performances for the Friends of SIPCA at the Goethe-Institut Sydney and a solo recital in Gisborne, New Zealand.
Leroy continues his advanced musical training at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and remains active in international masterclasses and academies. Most recently, he participated in the Volodymyr Krainev International Competition (“Kharkiv Meets Zurich”) and the International Summer Piano Academy in Disentis, Switzerland, where he studied with Thomas Hecht.
At the end of 2025, Leroy completed his Conservatorium recital with a mark of 95/100, reflecting a high level of artistic maturity, technical refinement, and musical understanding.
As an educator, Leroy brings a calm, thoughtful, and highly structured approach to teaching, guiding students with clarity, patience, and long-term vision while fostering both technical excellence and musical confidence.
